Meta has reportedly shared its AR and VR hardware roadmap until 2027 with employees. The report is coming from The Verge which claims a presentation was shared with thousands of Meta Reality Divison employees. The presentation talked about what the company is planning to do in the AR/VR space in the next four years or so.
The roadmap is said to begin with the Quest 3 launch later this year. It will a direct successor to Quest 2 and is internally codenamed, Stinson. It will be 2x thinner, 2x more powerful, and focused on delivering mixed-reality experiences but will also cost more. It will even have 41 new apps and games ready for users to experience with the new headset. Another device codenamed Ventura is planned for 2024 with a goal to "pack the biggest punch we can at the most attractive price point in the VR consumer market".
There is a third "most advanced" Quest device under development which is currently referred to as La Jolla. It is not confirmed but it could be a Quest Pro successor. It will likely be the most feature-rich and expensive headset in the Quest lineup. The team is also focusing on the comfort aspect of wearing a headset.
Meta surely has more aspirations for AR devices as it believes they can become as commonly used as smartphones are today. It partnered with Luxottica to release Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses in 2021. The company is planning a second-generation glass release for this fall followed by a third-generation device in 2025. This future device will have a display using which users can view messages, scan QR codes, and do real-time translations. There will be a "neural interface" band for control purposes through hand gestures and movements. The company even wants to offer a virtual typing experience of the same level as it is available on smartphones.
The biggest star of the roadmap is Meta's first full-fledged AR headset planned for 2027. It is codenamed Orian and is under development for the past eight years. It will be an advanced headset with all the latest technologies and can even project high-quality digital avatar holograms in the real world. This is the reason it will also be a lot more expensive. It will be available to employees for internal testing in 2024.
