HP's new Omen X Compact Desktop is a backpack PC for VR gamers

06 June 2017 0

Huge size, impressive grills, loads of connectivity, a high-end GPU, and captivating lighting; these attributes come to our mind when we think about a high-end gaming desktop. LAN parties with such a huge system are impossible because you don't wanna carry that gal around on your back to your friend's place and skip gym the next morning. Well, HP knows this and has refined its last year's announced HP Omen X Compact Desktop which is exactly a VR powerhouse able to sit on your back.

Omen X Compact is so small that by design it is able to fit in any backpack, making it a great option for travelers, full-room VR and, the best LAN parties. Looking at the size of this PC, it might be a potential replacement for a gaming console. HP wanted the customers to indulge in a VR space which is not bound by the length of the cables that current VR Ready PCs put a limitation on. So, does the size affect the performance of the new machine?

Pretty much no. The Omen X Compact Desktop is loaded with a factory-unlocked NVIDIA GTX 1080 graphics powerhouse which easily exceeds the minimum requirements for VR. The desktop is powerful enough to seamlessly run 4K gaming experiences. With an Intel Core i7 Kaby Lake, 16 GB of GDDR5X RAM and 1TB of PCI-e SSD, this compact desktop has the right specs to deliver whatever a hardcore gamer wants.

Let’s talk about some connectivity options. This Omen X comes with 5x USB type-A, 1x Ethernet, 1x USB-C, HDMI, and a Display Port. The PC itself has 4x USB type-A, 1x USB-C (Thunderbolt), 1x audio jack, a HTC Vive power-out, HDMI 2.0, and a Mini Display Port. That's some advanced connectivity option considering the size.

The OMEN X Compact Desktop was revealed a while back as a concept, built to be used inside backpacks for VR. Following feedback, HP has redesigned the Compact Desktop with versatility in mind, both as a backpack PC, and/or a powerful desktop. The separately sold VR backpack allows the user to hook this desktop on their back with up to 4 rechargeable batteries guaranteeing one hour of play time each. The system comes with a dock that enables the desktop to be used as a high-end PC and also for good old "desktop" gaming.

Naturally, such a powerhouse machine is going to come at a complementing price. Omen X Compact Desktop is expected to be priced at around $2,499 with the backpack coming in at $599.
