Xiaomi patents 4-sided curved smartphone display

09 February 2019 4

The smartphone industry is a very faced paced arena where to survive as a top contender, a company needs to heavily invest in R&D. Fast-rising Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi is surely doing so which could be seen through its patents showcasing interesting new ideas and technology. Previously, Xiaomi patented dual-hole display on a smartphone. We have also seen Xiaomi reaching a deal with Nokia to explore IoTs and AR/VR.

Now in the latest development, Xiaomi has filed a patent with a smartphone display featuring four edges. Previously we have seen Samsung devices having edges on either one side or two sides like on Galaxy S7 Edge (with two sides having curves) while Galaxy Note Edge (with a one-sided curve).

What makes Xiaomi’s offering unique is to have edges on all four sides of the phone (top, bottom, left, right). What’s interesting is that the graphical representation of this shows a smartphone with no space for selfie camera or earpiece at the front. We have already seen something similar in the shape of Mi Mix 3 and Mi Mix 25.

Currently, there is no surety as to when such a design might become a reality, though it's surely interesting to see that Xiaomi is willing to try out new things. Do you find this interesting? Let us know in the comment section below.
