ZTE, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is attempting to launch a smartphone with faster 5G speeds. The CEO of the company, Lixin Cheng, gave a time frame for the launch but never mentioned any exact dates. In an interview, the CEO mentioned that the smartphone would be available either by the end of the year or the beginning of next year. However, the company has also kept in mind that a change of plans may be needed, depending upon the availability of 5G networks. The CEO did also make a mention of the possibility of releasing a 5G tablet or wireless-internet hub.
AT&T is looking towards supporting 5G network in around a dozen cities this year. Well, Qualcomm had even spoken about manufacturing chips that would support higher internet speeds. With all this in place, all ZTE would need is a right mix of these ingredients and the world may very well witness what ZTE plans on launching. Support from U.S carriers won’t be much of a problem for the company has it has sold phones before through carriers in the U.S.
While ZTE may not exactly pose a potential threat to the bigger guns in the market, being the first to release a 5G smartphone would give it the foothold it needs to drive operations further. ZTE was one of the first companies to actually pull off the concept of a foldable smartphone so having it make the first 5G enabled smartphone isn’t exactly farfetched.
